Thank you to everyone who provided suggestions! Here is a compiled list of
responses:
The McCullough series
Try "I, Claudius" or "Quo Vadis" maybe even "Ben Hur"

Graves, Robert "I, Claudius"

3 suggestions: I, Claudius and Claudius the God by Robert Graves

The silver pigs and its sequels by Lindsay Davis. These are detective
stories set in Imperial Rome.

The course of honour, also by Lindsay Davis, the love story of
Emperor Vespasian and his mistress, the greed slave woman Antonia
Caenis.

Lindsey Davis' mysteries, and her novel THE COURSE OF
HONOR are set during the Roman empire and are excellent,
but they are adult titles.

Davis, Lindsey. "Silver Pigs" (this author has done a whole series of
mysteries set in ancient Rome, they're listed on the website you sent
me)

Try the series of mysteries set in ancient Rome by Davis. First title is
Silver Pigs. All are great.

Set a little later, during the declining days of the Roman Empire,
the late Rosemary Sutcliff's novels of Roman Britain (Eagle of the
Ninth, etc. -- available in new editions) are superbly written and give
a good view of what life was like under the Romans. Not to be missed.

Check these amazon.com listings for Lindsey Davis' ancient Rome mysteries.

THE THIEVES of OSTIA is a new novel for young people
just out, also set during the Roman empire, it's about sixth-
eighth grade level though.

Bradshaw, Gillian. "Imperial Purple"

Wood, Barbara. "Soul Flame"

any of the Rosemary Sutcliff books about Roman Britain, or maybe some
Geoffrey Trease books. Jack Whyte's series (The Camulod Chronicles)
which starts with Roman Britain and then goes into Arturian times

An easy read, but very good book is called "The Wadjet Eye." Set
in Alexandria, Egypt during the Greco-Roman period of Egyptian
history, the protagonist, Damon, goes on an odyssy-like
adventure. In the process he encounters several facets of life in
the Roman empire, and he meets several important figures of
the time. It is 6th grade reading level.

Also, I'll mention that Masterpiece Theater did an excellent
multi-part dramatization of "I, Claudius" about 15-20 years ago,
widely availbable now on home video. If your student gets interested
in this book, she might enjoy the Masterpiece Theater version, too,
which is very true to the original.
