Although most census records are only available for a fee, there are some
available at http://www.usgenweb.net/. This is a nationwide project to put
all records on the web and each state and county is at various stages of
completion. I used Smith County Texas and it has census records on line
from 1920 back to 1860. You can download images of the pages for free.
They are not necessarily easy to read, but can be. You just have to find
which page to look for.

They also have marriage, death, and birth records. There are many of the
cemeteries listed with names and dates of those buried. Some counties have
little information and others have more complete.

This is a great site for genealogy and is totally free.
