Dear Pat "Brung" or often "brang" is very common among the littlies in Australia too, and I once heard a linguistics lecturer explain it as their way of transferring rules about grammar they have deduced from other words. For example, ring, rang, rung, and sing, sang, sung follow the pattern and so they assume 'bring' does too. But then, when they learn 'brought' they confuse it with 'bought' and there is another issue to address. This transference is common with words like 'runned' and 'eated' and others that have a unique past tense as the child has worked out (without formal teaching) that the 'd' or 't' sound on the end of a word means that you have completed the action and so they apply it to all their verbs. I love listening to our kinders speak and trying to work out how they have arrived at their particular version of a word. That said, and despite my loathing of "I am interviewing for a job", I often ask who is the great judge who says this combination of sounds is acceptable and another one is not. Think about the combinations that end with 'uck' for instance - 99% are okay, one is not. Says who???
