My pet peeves: your/you're, its/it's, there/their/they're and less/few. In an article on the front page of this week's local weekly paper is the line "Just as Don and Barb have altered there view..." In fact, the first paragraph contains this phrase, "...restoration on the inside is what will peak the curiosity of local residents." This paper and its reporters are known for their misspellings and typos. It becomes a weekly contest to see who can find the most. During our principal's first week, I corrected him on the use of its/it's. He argued with me, saying it's was the possessive. I photocopied the entry in the dictionary for him. He now comes to me (and my trusty dictionary) when he's not sure of spelling or usage. I will turn to the dictionary often just to be sure. In fact, a public librarian friend of mine said that when they are asked reference questions over the phone, they must look up the answer, even if they know it. She had a bookmark in the spot that named the five Great Lakes, something she had known since second grade.
