This is probably a really dumb question, but it's driving me nuts.

My new computer is a compaq presario running Windows XL

My ISP is AOL with the old fashioned dial-up connection, not cable, DSL, etc.

When not in use, we put it on "stand by."

The screen goes dark. Later, when we come back, we move the mouse, and my
name is there with a cute little picture that I click to "wake up" the
computer. Under my name are the words:

1 program running (or 2 or 3, depending on what I left earlier)
5 unread emails. (or 1 or 2 or 7 or whatever)

So, to test it out, I open AOL, sign on, and lo and behold, there are 5
emails. It is consistently correct.

How does it know how many emails I have? Is it psychic? Is it surfing the
net when I'm not watching? Is my cat, Mr. Sparky, getting online and
checking out kitty porn sites (remember, for a neutered cat, he does have a
rather large libido).

Now, my son has a DSL connection, so I can see how his computer "knows"
because it is always hooked to the net. Really, this is kinda scary when you
think about it.
