I've used Atomz (http://www.atomz.com/search/). Their 'trial' is
actually a basic search tool with no time limit. When I used it, there
was some periodic re-indexing and no advertizing.

I've looked into FreeFind (http://www.freefind.com/), which looks pretty
good. Re-indexing and a low cost subscription ($5-19) for a no advert
results page.

Somewhat off-topic, but worth looking into: You might consider PHP and
database (mySQL) driven sites. Links and info goes into database, pages
are built around templates and search queries (you setup or provide for
users). Result is you have all your information available in one place
(database) and pages can have a consistant look and feel that is easily
modified in various templates. So when you have 3-4 new sites to add,
instead of opening all the different pages they need to be added to (
mr. smiths resource page, your library page, the what's new page, you
add to the database and let the server build the new pages. Another
benefit is ability to let trusted users add to the database if you want.

This setup would also provide a lot of interactivity. A database of
on-line encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, gov't sources could have
students answering questions about type of info needed with a suggested
list being returned rather than a static page of links to a wide range
and making student (or teacher) read through a lot of potentially
confusing information (or just picking the first one). The guidance
would (I think) actually help students think about what they need to
findout and how to get to it.

All this stuff does involve a learning curve but is getting more and
more common so there is a lot of support available. Tools are cross
platform (learn on any platform, transfers pretty seamlessly to others
), and most are free.

Learning how has been my summer project. Original plan was to be up and
running in September, but moving from elem to middle, home repairs, and
being too close to Powells Books have taken their toll this summer.
Probably early October now.

Subject: Re: TARGET: SITE SEARCH ENGINE

I was doing some research earlier this summer and found two excellent
sources of information on search engines online.

Debbie Abilock of Noodlequest and Noodletools sent me their website It's
super for what you are looking for. http://www.noodletools.com Then go
to "Choose the Best Search Engine"

Someone elsein LM_Net sent me this information. Another good site to
keep up with is Search Engine Watch. They stay on top of these concerns.
Their basic site is http://searchenginewatch.com
"At least one of the articles addresses paid inclusion specific
issue:"
   http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/00/11-inclusion.html

I found both of these quite helpful.

Dear Colleagues,
I use my high school web page for all class research. It is getting
unwieldy. Please share information on successfful site search engines
you may have discovered.
Have you found an effective free web site search engine through
an educational site that is also advertising free or an effective
commercial site search engine that has MINIMAL advertising?
    Thanks,
    Peggy Beck
