In Atlanta Public Schools all schools have a Media Technology Committee. The purpose of each committee is to deal with policy issues - philosophy, planning, and "nuts & bolts" issues such as how to accept gifts/donations, weeding, challenges, selection, volunteers, etc. The committee has to include the principal, media specialist, at least 2 teachers, 1 parent, 1 student, and 1 "community partner." We only have to meet a couple times a year, though we can meet more often if we wish. I've selected 4th grade students - 5th grade student leaders are always being tapped for other tasks, and 3rd graders are not quite mature enough to handle the meeting. 4th graders have very strong opinions and aren't shy about sharing them, and are often confident enough to participate in adult meetings. We meet during the day (usually 730am, before school starts) but only for about half an hour. I find them especially useful for "challenge" procedures. This is a different group from my parent volunteers who shelve books, read stories, sort overdue notices, etc. Hope this is helpful.
