Thanks to the more than a dozen of you who immediately recognized this as Emily's Runaway Imagination, by Beverly Cleary. When the patron began telling me about washing the horse and the "fast" 20 mile an hour car ride, I immediately knew I'd read it too in grade school. I asked if she remembered the upside down pie incident, and she said yes. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember the book. Gosh, I absolutely loved that book when I was little. It made read Black Beauty. Another, not-related question--I remember once seeing a nice glossy poster of the six wives of Henry the 8th. The background was a shadowy image of him and the six queens were in blocks two across by three down, in order of marriage. I would love to own this if anyone knows where I can buy one.
