That's interesting. I just had some Reps from Scholastic come to our school last week and scout out the MS / HS library. They were excited about our library size and were anxious to move the bookfair into my library next fall. (Including cash registers, credit card machines, etc.) The elementary librarian is running out of space for the event and I've volunteered to work with her to have an all-school bookfair in our larger library area, even though we are in two separate buildings on campus. We have no security system, but we will have volunteers and teachers helping at the bookfair. (aren't we brave?) It sounds like they have done some "profiling" of your schools and decided against it for whatever reason. Otherwise, why would the same company allow a high school in one state to offer a bookfair but not in another? (I'm sure there are basic guidelines that the company managers can take in each state, but that's pretty sad to not allow a school to hold a bookfair because of possible theft.) I'm sure there are other schools around the country that have bookfairs for their high school students--and they probably use Scholastic. (We had a variety of materials at the last bookfair, including hardback books, family books, games, software, etc. In fact, we made suggestions to the company about what we'd like to have and were very pleased with the materials we received. I believe the elementary librarian had her best bookfair ever....and I was even able to take over $1200 in free books as a part of HER profits to add to the MS / HS collection!) (We have 950 students in our school.) (As a side note: I have once used Walden Books as a bookfair company for high schools. However, their displays were less than desirable. ) ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley MS / US Librarian Ft.
