Hello from DC! Here are a few, just a few, highlights from recent postings on my ResourceShelf.Com site. (http://www.resourceshelf.com) The site is updated daily with new web-based resources, search tips, and other news of interest to all librarians. Now, let's get to a few highlights. 1) Home Safety--Database Source: National Library of Medicine National Library of Medicine Releases Household Products Database http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov From the announcement, "The National Institutes of Health today unveiled a consumer's guide that provides easy-to-understand information on the potential health effects of more than 2,000 ingredients contained in more than 4,000 common household products...The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Household Products Database (http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov) provides information in consumer friendly language on many of these substances and their potential health effects. For more technical information users can launch a search for a product or ingredient in TOXNET from the Product Page in the database. -- --- 2) Weather and Climate--Canada--Database Source: Environment Canada Canada Places Massive Weather Observations Database Online http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/Welcome_e.html The National Climate Data and Information Archive is now available on the web. From the announcement, "Environment Canada maintains a collection of over 200 million observations from over 7,000 sites some dating as far back as 1840...The archive consists of a database of hourly weather observations, including temperature, precipitation, air pressure, wind speed, and cloud types, as well as notes on the occurrence of thunderstorms, hail, fog and other types of weather." Interesting, Useful, and CooL! Thursday's ResourceShelf featured a list of keyword searchable databases of video from PBS. That's right, Video! http://tinyurl.com/ioqt 4) Feingold Introduces Library, Bookseller, and Personal Records Privacy Act http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/releases/03/07/2003731448.html From the announcement, "...legislation is aimed at protecting the privacy of law-abiding Americans by limiting the ability of the FBI to obtain library, bookstore, medical, and financial records and other sensitive personal information under the USA PATRIOT Act. Feingold's legislation would place reasonable limits on the FBI's access to this information by requiring the FBI to show how the information it is seeking relates to a suspected terrorist or spy before the information can be obtained." --- -- 5) Postage Stamps--United States Source: National Postal Museum/Smithsonian Institution New Online Exhibit, Art of the Stamp http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/artofthestamp/SubPage%20table% 20images/exhibit/exhibit.html This is a web version of an exhibit that opened at the National Postal Museum here in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. The exhibit, "showcases over 100 original pieces of stamp illustrations featured over the past 50 years." Click on the artwork link to view each stamp and learn its history. 6) Education--United States-Statistics Condition of Education - Now Web Enabled With 2003 Numbers http://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe The Condition of Education web site is an integrated collection of the indicators and analyses published in The Condition of Education for 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000. For each indicator there are links to the supporting documents (charts, tables, standard error tables, and supplemental notes). You can also download the indicator and corresponding supporting materials in PDF format. Some indicators may have been updated since they first appeared in print. 7) New "Search Shortcuts" From Ask Jeeves Very Useful.
