In our high school, the students' academic teachers write passes for
students from study hall to the library. This is a system that the
teachers asked for 25 years ago and that works well, because the teacher
is the check and balance for the student. The teachers want our library
to be a place where students can come to do work in a relatively quiet
setting (you know how the buzz of workers goes - so it's not silent).
They see it as an extension of their classrooms. They want the library to
focus on their students and curriculum. And I am grateful for their
support.

If the student doesn't have homework or a project for that class, the
teacher does not issue a pass. If the student misuses his/her library
time, then we return the pass to the teacher with a note (we also let the
student know this will happen). The teacher can have a talk with the
student about trusting him/her to do what s/he said s/he would do in
library. It is very effective.

Study hall teachers do not write library passes, the same for teachers
monitoring lunch periods. The fallback for students who forget to get
passes is the library staff. They can always come to see us for a pass,
and let us know what work they will be doing. We say yes more than no in
those cases.

Rather than focus on the numbers allowed from study hall or lunch, focus
on the work that they need to do. Some students feel they really "need"
to get out of study hall, but they don't need the library at all. (Like
you don't already know that...)

Did anyone else see the Zits cartoon in the Sunday paper yesterday? It
was perfect for this topic. I can't locate it on the web yet, but it is
worth looking for yesterday's comics section.
