It may be a good time, after reading the SF Chron article (good catch, Alice!) to revisit my unpublished piece from several years ago, "Teachers and a New Educational Technology," http://www.umbachconsulting.com/discussion/CBT.html. Perhaps still not completely obsolete, too, is Learning Related Outcomes of Computer Technology in K-12 Education, http://www.umbachconsulting.com/discussion/CBT.html. The basic issues seem to have persisted from 1996-98 when I was studying them. But I hope no one really sees computers as a panacea any more than they see any other particular set of tools or resources as a panacea.

I would be interested in hearing from librarians and teachers who have first-hand experience with using Web resources to support and expand student learning in social studies, government, civics, and economics, especially in the upper grades (say, 10-12). Any success stories out there, especially with regard to exploring current public policy issues? I am working on some articles on the topic, for publication in a library journal, and hope to incorporate examples of current experience.

Ken

--------------------------------------------------------------

Kenneth W.
