It is a real disorder. However, it is relatively uncommon, and *far* more rare than reading problems from other causes. And, even if it is the source of a child's reading problems, overlays will not give back the reading and reading instruction that has been lost in the meanwhile. So, while it is absolutely worth investigating, overlays aren't going to singlehandedly raise those reading test scores :-) One thing I look for is the "words moving around" or other specific indicators that it's a vision thing (though occasionally a kid's been *prompted* to think they're moving around and it turns out there are no vision issues); for many people with dyslexia, the letters behave perfectly rationally -- it's just a challenge to figure out the sounds & words they represent. You can see why a diagnostician can be important for getting a child on the right remediation path...
