Using ProQuest, I found a number of articles that appear to me to be more balanced in their analysis of AR and RC than the first one posted: Accelerated Reader: What are the lasting effects on the habits of middle school students exposed to Accelerated Reader in elementary grades?; Linda M Pavonetti; Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Newark; Dec 2002; Vol. 46, Iss. 4; pg. 300, 12 pgs Accelerated reader: Does it work? If so, why?; Stephen Krashen; School Libraries in Canada, Ontario; 2002; Vol. 22, Iss. 2; pg. 24, 4 pgs Keeping score; Karin Chenoweth; School Library Journal, New York; Sep 2001; Vol. 47, Iss. 9; pg. 48, 4 pgs Internal point/counterpoint: One school library media specialist's love/hate relationship with accelerated reader; Kirschenman, Jean Wolf; School Library Media Activities Monthly, Baltimore; Dec 1999; Vol. 16, Iss. 4; pg. 24, 2 pgs The accelerated reader: An analysis of the sotfware's strengths and weaknesses and how it can be used to its best potential; Poock, Melanie M; School Library Media Activities Monthly, Baltimore; May 1998; Vol. 14, Iss. 9; pg. 32, 4 pgs Julie Julie Anderson, Librarian Liberty High School 425-837-4901 Renton, WA 98059 andersonj@issaquah.wednet.edu -----Original Message----- From: Kathy Graves [mailto:kgraves@SISNET.SSKU.K12.CA.US] Sent: Monday, March 31, 2003 10:24 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: AR Program articles I have kept some back issues of School Library Journal which included articles about the issues surrounding AR and Reading Counts types of programs. Here are the edition numbers and article titles: SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL July 2000 "Formula for Failure" by Betty Carter. pp. 34-37. November 1998 The cover title is: "How Schools Sour Kids on Reading: What You Can Do to Help." The title of the article is: "Make Lemonade: How to Sweeten Your School's Climate for Reding" by Mary Leonhardt. pp. 28-31 October 1996 "Hold the Applause! Do Accelerated Reader and Electronic Bookshelp Send the Right Message?" by Dr. Betty Carter. pp. 22-25 I use these articles whenever I am faced with someone who either blindingly supports or pooh-pooh's these kinds of reading incentive programs. Perhaps they will be of help to those who recently asked about AR on this list. *********************************************************************** Kathy Graves, IMC Director/Librarian Siskiyou County Office of Education 609 South Gold Street, Yreka, CA 96097 e-mail: kgraves@sisnet.ssku.k12.ca.us FAX: 530-842-8436 hmpg: http://www.sisnet.ssku.k12.ca.us/~imcftp AV: 530-842-8428 Phone: 530-842-8427 Library: 530-842-8430 *********************************************************************** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
