characters and copyright?

An art major, currently attending college needs to paint a few murals to
fulfill certain course requirements.  He has offered his services to my school.
It was suggested that the library walls be painted with various storybook
characters.  Since I work in a K-12 school the characters would range from Easy to
Adult Fiction; historical figures would also be included.  As I was making a
list of possible characters -- the thought crossed my mind that I might be
breaking copyright.  Any feedback you could offer would be very helpful.  Thank
you.
