I too, am in the process of attending school online for my master's = degree. With working full time, coaching, and committee work, it is just = impossible to drive the 40 minutes to and from class every week at a = certain time. We have mostly online communication with two weekends = during the semester where we meet on campus The other particpants in my = classes are from around the state of Wisconsin. I really enjoy having = such a diverse group and hearing about the different ways they run their = library media centers. I do find the program more challenging that = traditional classroom instruction because you do have to contribute = meaningful thoughts and ideas to discussions in order to get participation = credit. I could have easily shown up in a classroom and gotten credit for = being there, without contributing. I also enjoy being able to work on = class work when I have the time, whether it be in my pajamas with a nice = cup of coffee on a Sunday morning, or midnight during the school week. It = really forces me to delegate and priortize as well. I can look at my work = week and decide when the best time to work on my school work is. The = other thing my online classes have forced me to do is become familiar with = different types of technology. I've had to collaborate with as many as = six people to complete projects online. We've used microphones through = chat rooms, online services such as Yahoo briefcase, we've had to zip and = unzip files, video cameras, digital cameras, email and attachments, web = design software, and we've also helped each other troubleshoot technology = problems through discussion alone. I don't believe that I would have been = able to continue on with my education had it not been for my online = program. =20 Katie Eickelman Library Media Specialist Girls Tennis Coach Waupun High School Waupun, Wisconsin keickelman@waupun.k12.wi.us 920-324-5591 ext 2843 >>> Sarah Christensen <SECHRIST@RENLEARN.COM> 11/06/03 02:52PM >>> I am currently attending college online and find it more challenging than actually being in a classroom. You have to put forth a lot more effort = when you can't be face to face. The discussion portion of the classes is the only way that instructors know you are actually attending, and is more intensive than actually being in the classroom. You can be in the = classroom and get credits for attending, whereas online you have to actively take = part in the class to receive credit. You are forced to come up with meaningful contributions, and not just sit there and take up space. Working full = time and having three children prohibits me from obtaining a degree in the traditional manor. I am working towards my associates degree right now, with hopes of getting my PhD in Psychology and working with parents and children in a terminal ward at a children's hospital someday. Dear Dr Allan I can't understand your position - why does the delivery mode have to = impact on the quality of the course? Surely it is what you do and what you do with that, that is the key? = Online delivery allows so many more people to participate in programs, whether at the doctoral level or not. It offers access to those in remote areas, to those who would have no opportunity to attend a particular university because of geography; to those who are physically disabled or ill and = cannot attend daily; to those with responsibilities that make physical attendance during "business hours" impossible; to those with alternative lifestyles = to study when it suits their needs; to those with a host of reasons that = makes going to the bricks and mortar too hard. In 2001, my mum (now 76) was awarded an Order of Australia (high honour) because she recognised that = many elderly folk are isolated (include housebound in that) and she began U3A Online - that is the University of the 3rd Age which allows those over 65 = to continue to learn and grow and remain mentally active. Web-based delivery shouldn't affect the quality of the learning, participation and evaluation that is required and acquired. I am about to embark on my third masters degree, and, like the others entirely online, = and I challenge anyone to demonstrate that what I did in either of the first = two was in any way inferior to attending a building. I believe that the children in my care benefit so much from what I learn online that they are much better off than if I didn't study because I cannot attend the universities that offer the courses that meet my needs and interests. = (And even though I won't have a PhD after my name, three masters degrees must = be getting pretty close to a doctorate anyway.)
