My assumption (based on this actually happening at my school, when there
was a ConEd "oops" outside our front door) is that if the power goes out,
we don't have school. There would be no lights in the classrooms, the
kitchen would be unable to function, etc.. That's not a good enough reason
to opt for a print encyclopedia. Our internet service going out, on the
other hand, would still leave the school operable but we would be unable to
utilize any electronic resources - a more realistic reason to keep print
resources available. As Mr. Lambert says, having a back up is worthwhile.
My other reasons for keeping print is to show my students how quickly you
can get information from them AND that there is life beyond
Encarta. However, I do not suggest that they have a print encyclopedia at
home when I make my "ready reference shelf" suggestions to their parents.
