I agree, it is very frustrating that faculty members do not understand the
importance of teaching information literacy skills until they bring their
students to the media center and see that students are clueless as to how to
find appropriate information in printed and online resources. They expect
all students to know upon entry to the media center not acknowledging the
fact that students come to us with many different skill levels. When I have
collaborated with some teachers, an insufficient amount of time is given to
planning and discussing a lesson. Then when the students come in, they are
amazed that searches do not go as smoothly as they had hoped. This year I
decided to orient all grade levels to the media center and its resources
(huge undertaking) to ensure that students are able to navigate their way
around the media center. I would also to have all classes return to the
media center to learn specific skills such as evaluating a web site.
Unfortunately, most faculty members do not recognize the importance of
information literacy. I have addressed the faculty about this issue and I
have written memos to them to that effect but I don't seem to have the
support of everyone and I'm sure that the reason is not that they wouldn't
like to have these lessons taught to their students, but rather, they are
overwhelmed with all of the standardized testing requirements and
preparation in our state. Library skills are not a high priority for most
teachers in our schools. However,I will continue to do my part whenever I
am given the opportunity. I think many of us feel your frustration. Keep
your head up and forge ahead I say!

Hi,
My frustration comes after teaching a collaborative
lesson that works with praise from the teacher about
how wonderful it was and we see how well the
students do and come the next school year I ask about
doing it again and hear "no, it just takes too much time."
AARGGHH!!!
