Whew! It's been twenty-five years since we have had a "big one" in our area. This one qualifies. We got electricity today and it was cause for much rejoicing. The heat has been hovering around 91 and it makes the clean-up even more difficult. We ventured out today to try and get across our county to see if my elderly parents still had a house. The roads are mostly passable. The National Guard is out in force helping to keep the "lookie lou's" under control. Disaster relief has ice and water available in a lot of areas. There are long lines at the gas stations. Most of the traffic signals are not functioning. As we made our way across Baldwin County we were amazed at the number of times huge trees fell around a house leaving it untouched, of course there are heart breakers too. We are among the lucky ones, our house is the only one in our neighborhood not to have significant damage. My parents weren't quite so lucky. Still no power or water. Heritage trees that we loved have blocked the drive into their home. We hiked in crawling under and over trees. We don't even know how to start making a path down the half mile drive to their house. It is heart breaking to see their lives so displaced. They just want to go home. The storm surge took out all the piers along Perdido Bay and our area of Mobile Bay as far as we can see. School is cancelled until... From the highway it looks like our school still has a roof. I hope you never have to smell the refigerator after it has been left without power for four days! UGh!
