I was head of acquisitions for a medium sized public library and that is what we had to do. To keep waiting lists for best sellers reasonably short, we had to buy an incredible number of copies of those titles. Then, most became clutter--dead wood on the shelves. Selling them is the best way to recoup some of the money. Our library system actually sells library discards directly to patrons on eBay, and I wrote an article about that for LIBRARY JOURNAL a few years ago. Sometimes the amount of money we got for things came as a real shock--as in up to $75 for an out-of-print picture book of great interest to the home school market, for instance.
