Your description is what I have always understood about the difference. Some teachers want a works cited; some a bibliography. It probably would be wise to find out what individual teachers think is the difference. As I have taught "works cited" with the subject teacher in the room, she confirmed that everything in the works cited matches a parenthetical citation in the body. There seems to be a greater desire of teachers now for a works cited, and that may reflect a concern over plagiarism. It's a bit easier to match things up with a Works Cited. Maureen S.
