I had the great good fortune to hear Maya Angelou, in person, last night and I just had to share my thoughts with you. Breathtaking, spellbound, we listened to her recite poetry for over an hour. Mostly the poetry of other primarily African American poets--James Weldon Johnson, Anne Spencer, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and more and some of her own. She made us laugh. She made us think. She urged us by sing talking "be someone's rainbow in the clouds." She must have said at least twenty times for the audience to go to the library and find the librarian "be he she or he, Mr. or Mrs., or Miss or Ms....or "Yo" to direct us to the poetry section. And after their jawed dropped to have them help us find the poetry of African Americans. And to read, for poetry is the essence of the human spirit, and though our bodies may grow old, or spirits never age... Be still my heart! What a joyous evening. I had to share it with someone, so I thought I would share it with you...for there is always a rainbow in the clouds! Have a precious day and share the rainbow! Adam I didn't know until tonight that Ms. Angelou was raped as a child and for several years thereafter was mute. Her grandmother took her in when others thought she would be forever dumb and urged her to read poetry. And that several years later a teacher told Maya that she could never really understand the poetry unless she spoke it. And she did! What a national treasure! I could have listened to her for hours!
