We check out magazines--and I do put them in the circulation system
(catalog them). After the initial cataloging of the item (generic)--
Title, Publisher, Place of Publication, etc. --- I will put individual
barcodes on the items that check out. (Once I put the initial
information about the magazine in the system, I am merely adding to the
record (as if it were parts of a multi-volume set). Each monthly issue
takes only a few minutes to input, but with many periodicals, this could
increase the time spent on this project (and I had time to do this).

The August issue of Time magazine is listed in the system with the
barcode and then it will contain the call number:
PER 051 TIME

and in the DESCRIPTION it contains the date of the issue:
Issue Aug 22, 2004, No. 162, Vol. 25

All of this is seen by the patron at the OPAC.

I also add the electronic access information in the MARC record-- if we
have it in a database, the link goes directly to the database. If the
magazine is indexed and available online, I give the website information
also which is also linked.

It just helps with statistics...as if anyone cares....la, tee, da...

Subject: [LM_NET] TAR: How do you check out magazines?

I am wondering about the different ways LMS check out magazines. Some
catalog them all and check out like a book, others use the primitive
method of signing out a magazine on a sheet of paper, some use the card
method just for magazines...I would like to know what any of you do and
why. For example, if you catalog them, why do you feel this is best. If
you use a different method, please describe it and why you like it. I am
trying to find the best method for me. Thanks all.
