I have a designated book truck that forgetters can choose books to look at during selection. It doubles as my easy non-fiction section so the kids are usually very very happy to look at these books. With the older kids I keep a basket of books and magazines at their tables for them to browse. No reason for them to be up and out of their seats! It works pretty well especially since the kids aren't allowed to come back if they "find" their books until recess. I do sometimes let students go back to their homerooms if they left their book in their desk or backpack. I should because they *knew* they were coming to library, but if I'm feeling charitable, I do anyway. Hope this gives an idea or two.
