Hi all, I did not get too many responses on good sections to read aloud from Beverly Cleary. I am still collecting, so if anyone else has some, please send them to me, and I will add to the hit. The suggestions I did receive are below - many thanks to those who posted them! Linda L. Ellen Tebbits and the slipping down of her ballet tutu is one of my favorites. Felice Feldman Castle Hills Elem San Antonio, TX My favorite is from Beezus and Ramona where Ramona draws in her library book. It's in the first chapter. Joanne Proctor, retired Topeka, Ks A few years ago I used Ramona and her Father for a read aloud for a particular 4th grade class in the library. Talks of issues of a dad looking for work... perhaps timely today. Not the funniest of any of her books, but there were absolutely delightful chapters. Many would stand alone easily. Marcia McCarthy LMS A.D. Oliver Middle School Brockport, NY I love the bit in Beezes and Raomona where Ramona gets a library card and checks out a library book and writes in it. The nice thing about Beverly Cleary's books is the chapters. It's easy to pick just one and read it. The one that comes to mind most often is in Ramona Quimby Age 8, Chapter 3 "The hard-boiled egg fad." I also always enjoyed the kindergarten years, but can't quickly look up the chapters where Ramona is asked to "sit here for the present" and when she can't resist her classmate's ringlets. Linda Lucke Learning Center Director Butterfield School Libertyville, IL LLucke@d70.k12.il.us "Teachers aren't paid to love children. Loving children is what teachers do for extra credit. It's not the main assignment - but it's more important than the main assignment. Extra credit is done of your own free will. Work and love given of your own free will is always more joyous, better quality stuff."
