I like the RiverDeep software: Sammy's Science House Bailey's Book House Millie's Math House Trudy's Time and Place (for History SOLs) You go to Sunburst.com website and they have Riverdeep software for education. It is expensive. Hope this helps. Don't know who's going to be using it, when, and how it's tied to curricula, but some quality software (leaning towards remedial/older 'cause that's my area) includes: Read, Write and T ype (http://www.readwritetype.com) WOrdQ/SpeechQ (this is sort of in the "assistive technology" category) Things from www.donjohnston.com Neighborhood Map Machine!!! KidPix!!! Kidspiration!!! We have Jump Start on our networks. I'm a third year librarian in a preK-5 school. Although not provided by my district, I suggest the Visual Thesaurus software. One or two tries on the site's trial site might be worthwhile. I especially intend to incorporate the software with library lessons for ESL students to broaden their fluency...would work well for any class or grade. The website to visit for further information is: www.visualthesaurus.com. I would highly recommend Inspiration or Kidspiration (a K-5 version of the other one) and take a look at this product: Scholastic Key for Microsoft Office http://www.siliconheights.com/catalog/tomsnyder/early_learning.html check out Study Island www.studyisland.com I would suggest subscriptions to the following programs (not all are software programs but rather online resources that can be used by students, teachers, and parents). Teaching Books ([ http://www.teachingbooks.net ]http://www.teachingbooks.net) subscription costs around $375+ depending on the number of students. Provides students and teachers with book, author, and illustrator information--- a virtual visiting author / illustrator online! A free trial is available!! If you're using the AR program, invest in QuizList Interactive ([ http://www.quizlistinteractive.com ]http://www.quizlistinteractive.com ) --- the cost is $149 + a one time sign up fee of $99. This provides a instant database of your library's AR records by author, title, keyword, subjects, reading level, genre, and more. A great resource to use to gain more usage of your AR program's capabilities. A 30-day free trial is available. Big6 Turbo Tools--- [ http://www.big6turbotools.com ]http://www.big6turbotools.com --- school cost $495 for K-5 school; provides a software program for information-seeking process needed for instruction and research. If you're using Big 6, this is a great program to increase the students' ability to understand the problem solving stages necessary for good research. A 14-day free trial is available. Inspiration software (a great tool for graphic organization of research) is a software program that can be used by all students at all levels. A 30 day free trial is available. [ http://www.inspiration.com ] http://www.inspiration.com Other free trials and software programs that she might be interested in are available at: [ http://www.edresources.com/ ]http://www.edresources.com/ Stationery Studio, without question It is a writing enhancement program that encourages teachers and students to communicate in a variety of ways. It starts with a wide array of choices of backgrounds and frames, as well as some matching envelope makers, then allows the user to customize the font, the colors, the size of the writing, and the style (full page, blank-on-top-lines-on the-bottom, blank-on-the-bottom-lines-on-top, or no lines at all) It can be used to type on the computer, or for printing fun pages on which to write by hand. Both manuscript, including D'Nealinan, and cursive can be in regular style or dotted lines for handwriting practice. "Funky" fonts from the computer can also be used in addition to those that are built into the program. It allows you to print in color, in grayscale, or in coloring book format to color in yourself (a great savings on color printing costs). It allows you to chose how many motifs to print per page, and works well for making shape books, as well as post card and note card options. The program permits a choice of formats for saving, including jpg, photoshop, bmp, pict and others depending on what else you might want to do with your completed work. Students love to use it for writing, and teachers find it a good way to make attention grabbing notes home to parents. The CD is accompanied by a book of recommendations for using the program in the classroom, and is a hybrid CD that is usable on a PC or a Mac, both OS 9 and the newer OS X. The program is a real workhorse that can be used across the curriculum in all disciplines as well as administrative uses. If I had to recommend just one purchase, it would be Stationery Studio, available through their web site at [ http://www.fablevision.com/stationerystudio/ ]http://www.fablevision.com/stationerystudio/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
