In reply to Ann Marie Gordon.

At the IFLA and IASL Conferences last year, a major issue for the
African and South American delegates who run programs on severely
restricted budgets, was the maintenance of literacy skills. It got me
thinking - we have the same problem. AR programs and directed reading -
any reading program/promotuion - are methods for creating a reading
culture acroos the school and cultivating a reading habit, something
that won't occur in the classroom. For kids to continue literacy skills
development and to develop a reading habit we need to encourage literacy
at every opportunity - our catchcry should be - libraries help to create
a culture of reading excellence across the school/curriculum. This is so
important - kids need to be literate first before thay can be
information literate and use technology. The technology is not
compensative.
