Hi, everyone, I am looking forward to Barbara's HIT on this topic. Every year, someone suggests we start an AR program at our school, and this year, the literacy specialist and I agreed that we should have a ready-made handout explaining why we feel we don't need it. I have my own reasons, and she has even better ones. I know there are schools that do see improvement from using it, however, we believe in a different approach. And on the topic of ebooks, I have thought for a long time how wonderful it would be to have a huge array of easily-downloaded books for my own leisure reading. I've also been eagerly looking forward to the day when my son could have that kind of easy access. He is legally blind, but a visual learner and a very fast reader. Every time I spot an article on ebooks in PW or the Wall St. Journal or SLJ, I read it. So I've got a feel for the recent history of the business side of it. Last week, on a plane from LA to DC, I noticed how many passengers had laptops with them and guess what? They were all watching DVD's. ALL of them! Every single person on the plane who was reading had something paper-based: magazines, newspapers, books and 3 business types who had xeroxed papers they were writing notes on. Does this mean anything? No, it's too small a sample. (If I had had my laptop, the numbers would have been different - I probably would have been doing some work on my never-ending lesson plans. But we were only bringing carry-on bags, so I couldn't justify the weight.) It made me think, though. Thanks for the good target, Barbara, and I'm really glad we're still benefitting from your career! Melissa Melissa Techman, MLS Broadus Wood Elementary School, 185 Buck Mtn.
