One more note to this--- I mentioned to Maureen that Scholastic usually offers a BOGO (buy one get one free) bookfair at the end of the school year. This allows the students "one more chance" to get a book that they missed during the first book fair---and it helps Scholastic to reduce their warehouse holdings. When the kids buy a book, one is donated to the school we've adopted to share the books with. MY next step to this community service project ---as we all know this is one of the bigger issues--- is to download copies of all of the MARC records that we own for these books (since many of the books are copies that we purchased at an earlier bookfair and cataloged in January) then send the records with the books. Since most of these schools are supervised by part-time staffs or non-certified individuals who don't catalog (or the school that can't afford cataloging), this is the component that will help move the books to the hands of the kids even faster! We offer community service projects during the year for our students, and our staff is often involved in these activities. One such activity involves working with libraries (usually public libraries), but I'd be interested in polling nearby schools that need "cataloging" done in their libraries (due to lack of staff or NO staff) and spend my community service time working to help these people learn how to access catalog records, learn how to tweak catalog records that they find so they can be adjusted to their holdings, and how to work more efficiently using their online catalogs. While there are opportunities and online catalogs available for many who do copy cataloging, we have to remember that for many school libraries, the staff is not aware of these access points or don't have Internet options to download the records. I think it would be a great opportunity to share "more than books" for those schools who DO have titles and an automated catalog but don't have the staff to do original (or copy) cataloging.
