I "knew" in sixth grade.
My family had always been readers. One of my earliest memories was sitting with my
brother and my mother, listening as she read Raggedy Ann out loud to us. As I got
to be a reader I would often finish the page before she did!
We were regular patrons of the public library. My mother was good friends with the
librarian and we spent many hours there, searching for the right books and reading.
I can still picture the shelf where the Nancy Drew mysteries were located.
Then our town built a new school. My mother had just earned her MLS and volunteered
her time to help set up the library in the new school, where I was to be a sixth
grader in September.
The new librarian was young, cool, and very friendly. We unpacked new books,
arranged them on the shelves, and I got to bring home as many as I wanted (I was a
voracious reader). My mother typed many catalog cards at home in the evenings.
When the school opened in September I had a friend, the librarian, and she let me
help her out whenever I could. It was fun being a special helper and I knew I had
found a special thing.
