University of Wisconsin-Stout is offering seven online literacy courses for summer session. http://www.uwstout.edu/soe/profdev/courses.shtml#read RDGED 703-960C Children's Literature in the Reading Program (grades K-5) Explore the world of today's authors and illustrators and the best new fiction and information books. Discuss exciting new ways to integrate children's literature with curriculum activities. 3 cr. begins June 5, 2006 RDGED 704-960C Young Adult Literature in the Reading Program (grades 6-12) This class provides strategies to build an appreciation of literature, motivate life-long readers, and encourage critical thinking across the curriculum. Topics include the nature of teenage readers and genres of young adult literature in the classroom curriculum. 3 cr. begins June 5, 2006 RDGED 701-960C Developmental Reading K-12 This course focuses on evidence-based instructional practices to promote word recognition, fluency, and comprehension along with procedures to assess children's development as they move from emergent literacy to learning to read and into the reading to learn stage. 3 cr. begins June 12, 2006 EDUC 744 921F Reading Strategies for the Content Areas Designed for teachers of science, social studies, history, mathematics, and the arts to explore research-based instructional strategies that will enable students to read and understand complex content text. 3 cr. begins June 12, 2006 RDGED 702-906C Seminar: Reading in the Content Areas of K-12 Research-based teaching methods, study strategies, and technology focusing on the ability to use language processes (reading, writing, speaking, listening) to learn subject matter across the curriculum. This course is designed for reading and language arts teachers or teachers seeking reading certification. 3 cr. begins June 19, 2006 Teaching and Assessing Writing with the 6-Traits EDUC 744 920F - Elementary (Gr. K-4) EDUC 744 909F - Middle/High School (Gr. 5-12) Learn to teach and assess writing with the 6-Traits of writing (voice, ideas, word choice, organization, sentence fluency and conventions). Learn to use the 6-Traits with the writing process to teach revision strategies. Help learners meet higher standards and improve test scores. 3 cr. begins June 19, 2006 RDGED 706-960C Assessment and Evaluation of Reading and Language Development A study of the interrelationship of assessment and evaluation to literacy development including current research in reading and language arts practices. Selection, administration and interpretation of formative and summative literacy assessments for the purpose of evaluating reading and language processes.
