LM_NET Archive

Hello, I am looking for information on RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification systems) and how well they work in school libraries. I
work in a high school library and we will be installing a security
system over the summer (we do not currently have one). Most of the area
schools use 3M's magnetic system (with the Tattle-tape strips) and
report great use (as have past LM-Net archived messages). I am trying to
find out if any school libraries currently use RFID and what success and
problems they have had. The RFID models appear to have great potential
for inventory purposes as you do not have to individually scan barcodes.

I have searched the archives of LM_Net and Googled "RFID school
libraries" on the Internet without a lot of success. Most of the
information I can find is prior to 2004. I am interested in finding the
following information and will post a HIT of compiled responses (I will
not include names and email addresses of those replying). I apologize if
some of my questions are repetitive, but I really need some information!

* Do you currently use a RFID system as a book-theft security
system? If so, what brand or model?
* How long have you used it and do you like it? Would you like to
change to another system?
* What problems have you experienced?
*       How has it helped?
* Do you still use individual barcodes on the library resources or
have you been able to integrate the RFID technology into your library
automation system? If so, can you share any information on how this was
done?
* Do you have any suggestions about the RFID system for me?

* Would anyone have their district's RFP (Request For Proposal)
when they bid for models that they would be willing to share? My
district would like to take an existing RFP and then edit it for our
purposes (rather than re-invent the wheel).

Thank you for any information you can share, and again, I will compile
all responses and post a HIT. Please reply to me at
