I have been a library media specialist long enought to have typed my own cards on a manual typewriter, I have a masters degree in computer science and will soon be finished with my Cisco Certification. If I say a computer is not working- it is not working. I have walked in their shoes. In my last position I worked with a combined job of library media specialist and tech support for a school of 1500 students and 500+ machines. I know that most technicians have no background in education, even those with a degree. Many have come up the ranks from custodial, maintenance or secretarial. Nothing wrong with that but it doesn't give one the background in education to make decisions about classroom practices and curriculum. Unfortunately the attitude of many involved with the technical aspect of computer techology is somewhat elitest. As an educator, library media specialist, and one somewhat knowledgable about technology in education I am tired of the tail wagging the dog. I had a science teacher break three VHS camera's in one day. Imagine the look on my face when the third one came back-broke. But I did not refuse to let him check out any more equipment or fix the equipment so that it would only operate if a code by an administator was punched in. Although many dark thoughts did cross my mind. Computers are no different. They are not sacred cows that only a select few can learn to operate and maintain. But if too many restrictions are set up they quickly become nothing more than email machines and dust collectors. Becky Vasilakis District Library Media Specialist Amanda Clearcreek SD 328 E.
