Someone asked for a hit on the computer question I asked the other
day. To recap, one of my teachers was looking at a Compaq Presario
and wanted to know if it was a good deal. Here were the replies I
passed on to her. Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't buy anything with Vista on it. If she can get XP Pro on it,
it would be acceptable as a basic machine

She is buying a good but basic machine. Her processor is going to be
slow which will slow down her internet some what. For a couple of
hundred dollars more she can get a faster computer. Here is a site
which explains the processors
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question268.htm

A note, the machine only comes with an operating system (most do now a
days) so she will have to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office or some
other similar product that gives her word processing, database,
PowerPoint, etc. This will also cost her about $150 more.

If she's just using it for basic stuff, sure. Okay screen size, enough
RAM, slow but adequate processor. The only thing I would change is the
OS. Vista home basic is bunk. Go with XP PRO if possible from who vendor
is if possible.

Sounds good to me...the hard drive size and RAM are certainly
sufficient for most users. I'm not sure about what the processor
speed should be, but there's nothing wrong with the Celeron brand.
Haven't tried the VISTA operating system yet...we had some problems in
our school system with VISTA-PRO being incompatible with our Novell
Network software, but that has been resolved by our tech people.
