I have just been informed that S. 2344, the Internet Safety Education Act, unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee today without amendment. This bill will establish a competitive grant program of $10 million per year for 5 years for those providing Internet safety education to students, parents, and teachers. The program will be run through DOJ. There are some concerns about this because DOJ tends to see things through criminal "blinders." But the division that this will likely be run through (assuming the bill passes other hurdles) is Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention OJJDP. OJJDP has excellent relations with other players in the safe schools arena and expertise in the area of risk prevention. This bill is the very welcome alternative to HR 4134, which would have provided $25 million to I-Safe. Competition and innovation are very important at this stage. Thanks to any of you who contacted your Senators based on my prior request. And any of you folks in NJ, say a special thanks to your Senator Menendez for introducing this bill.
