Today I was in a 2nd grade classroom looking for a book in the classroom library. I noticed the book "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli. I asked the teacher why he had it, and he said he had it to read himself. But then he said he gave it to one of his students to read also. I was very surprised and commented that even though the reading level of the child might be advanced the content of that book was not appropriate for 2nd grade. He kind of brushed me off. The more I think about the more I think I need to do something. What should I do? Forget about it? While the book has some great reviews, it is clearly for an older crowd. The setting is high school! What was this teacher thinking! I'd like to know what you have done in a similar situation.
