I know it seems a little early to start with lesson plans but it's already July. School is only about a month and a half away. I was thinking that the CBS show Jericho presented several opportunites for lesson plans for older kids. By older kids I mean 5th-12th grade. For the uninitiated, Jericho is a CBS drama about life in a small KS town after a terrorist nuclear attack agains the United States. I know it sounds depressing but it's actually a good show and not that gory. Anyway, CBS cancelled the show after one season and the fans went ballistic. They launched a unprecedented effort to change CBS' mind about the show. I call it unprecedented because the entire effort was done on the internet. There were no face to face meeting per say. Fans emailed CBS, launched web sites, and sent 25 tons of nuts (a reference to one of the characters saying "Nuts!" to a demand to surrender) to CBS offices in NY and LA. Believe it or not, the effort was successful. CBS renewed the show as a mid-season replacement and will start re-running 1st season episodes starting this Friday. To me, this would be a great lesson plan for older kids on the power of the internet to affect change. It would also be a fine example of how the internet has changed how society views entertainment, information, etc. It would also be a good way for high school kids to discuss such current issues as nuclear terrorism, America's response to such a terrorist act, could such a scenario happen in real life, etc. Any opinions?
