Our paper ran a story last week that headlined the fact that in spite of Harry Potter, teen reading rates were down. It basically said that kids just read HP and that's it. I noticed that the people who conducted the research didn't include libraries and librarians-- National Endowment for the Arts, the US Department of Education ( and they know this how???- could they even find a school library- whoops I digress) and the organization for Economic Development- whoever they are. Here is a link to the article http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/news/192021 As I recall the NEA only counts books they consider literature and I'm not sure what that definition is. All I know is that my circulation is up every year by a significant margin and that the day before a break I'm so busy with kids who need something to read over the weekend or the break. When I go to the public library, winter or summer, the place is buzzing with kids and adults. They are not all on computers and the library doesn't have that many HP books! It just seems like more Little Red Hen mentality.
