Bravo!!! I wish you could send it to every school district and home in the country!
I talked with our tech department last year about this and they literally thought I
was crazy. I think it would be possible to convince them, but not our principals
and teachers. They all think filtering is the safety net. They keep adding more and
more filters.
When I stated my feelings that ipods could be used for educational purposes, they
were adamant that they not be allowed at school. This is a school that is pretty
tech savvy. Every teacher (mostly young teachers at our middle school) has a
website with assignments, grades, podcasts, blogs, and wikis. Many use smartboards,
grade cams, video presenters, etc. They will have none of it. Is it possible to
get a copy of your presentation?
If so, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Kathy

Subject: What trouble ...

will I get into if I include the following statements about filtering in a
Internet safety presentation for teachers?

What is not working ...

Reliance on Filtering
The misperception S
³Filtering technologies will protect young people from harm as they surf the
Internet.²

Filtering Reality
Filtering S
Will not effectively block ³porn traps² because they generally link to newer
sites.
Will not deter determined teens because they know how to jump over fences.
Does not protect against risks related to online communication.
Frequently blocks totally appropriate sites.
Is, at best, a ³speed bump.²

Filtering Reality
Over reliance on fences has created a ³false security² that children are
protected and safe and the failure to S
Teach safety skills.
Focus on responsible choices.
Effectively monitor.
Establish other limits ~ including the expectation that Internet use at
school must be for educational activities.

Filtering Reality
Educators should never take the perspective that a decision made by a
private company ~ that protects its processes and standards as a trade
secret ~ is an accurate decision!

The Supreme Court upheld the Childrenıs Internet Protection Act because it
was established that filters could easily be overridden to provide access to
inappropriately blocked sites.

I do understand that my comments will raise concerns about the policies in
many schools. The policies are wrong - she says, without a trace of
humility. ;-)

I did remove the statement that "educators or librarians should have the
ability and authority to override the filter." I am going to include this in
an additional PPT that is designed for ed tech committees, which I do hope
includes librarians, along with information on the need to review the
blocked categories.

But will administrators and/or ed tech directors use my materials on
Internet safety if my materials raise concerns related to district policies?
