We are having a storytelling festival at the end of the year. I am
wondering if any other elementary schools have had this. I'd love to
hear a brief description of what you did. This is our first year in our
new building with a mixture of 50% new students because we were
redistricted. We began the year by having a One Book One School and
having our K-5 teachers read Gooney Bird Greene to their classes along
with a variety of activities. Then we had a storyteller come in and
meet with each grade and just like Gooney our students learned how to
tell "absolutely true" stories. They shared them with other grade
levels in order to get to know each other. Now it's the end of the
year. The students are all writing "absolutely true" stories about
something that happened to them this year. We will bind these into
grade level books - as a memoir for our first year. The storyteller is
coming back and will work with a group of students so that during our
last week, we will have an evening story festival. Students and
possibly some teachers/parents will share brief stories. I'm sure some
of you have had something like this and I would love to hear about your
ideas. Please email me.
