I am not sure whether I sent out the latest news or not, but someone asked
me privately.

Julie's sentencing was postponed yet again, until May 18. The first
postponement was requested by the defense because they had added new defense
attorneys. The second two postponements were at the request of the state and
there are indications they have asked for more computer analysis.

This is a good sign for Julie.

But we all need to pay attention to the teachable moments in this case:

Filtering will not prevent porn traps. The spyware on this computer took
control of the browser and sent it to a site in Russia and from there lots
of porn popups. The filter did not stopped these sites -- and would not have
even if it had been updated properly.

Every computer needs appropriate security and browsers that do not allow
pop-ups.

Everyone -- principals, teachers, aides, substitutes, and students starting
the first day of kindergarten that they are allowed near a computer, needs
to know that something "yucky" could appear on the screen and the proper
response is to turn off the monitor and tell an adult -- and the adult
should call tech.

Responsible investigation is essential. If there was ever a situation that
should raise a "presumption of innocence," this is it. For teachers, I would
make sure that your union rules specifically address this.

There is more in a report on my csriu site.

Nancy
