A friend is seeking a book that made an impression on her as a child. Here are the details she can remember: "It received some sort of award, probably geared towards early teenaged readers. The place and season of the action was somewhere or sometime that was hot, and in my mind's eye there was a lot of white. (Buildings? Clothing? Stones? Italy? Greece?) It featured a boy who was lost, orphaned or perhaps had run away. He travelled on foot for a long time, possibly even losing his clothes and having to stay hidden as he searched for food. Someone gave him oranges, and the description of how those tasted when he was so hot, dry and hungry was a standout moment in the story. I remember liking it because the writing was good, and because it was set up for the reader, me, to identify with the lonely boy. When he received kindness from a person or people at the end, it was deeply satisfying and hopeful." I am wondering if this sounds familiar to any of you sages.
