Thanks to all who responded. I had more hits for requests than information. Here goes... This is what I do in my library. I work with the 7th grade teachers only. The teachers and their classes come to the library once on a seven day cycle for six months and work on geography questions using atlases, maps, almanacs, and reference books. The goal is twofold. Primarily it is to get the kids familiar navigating through print resources, becoming familiar with reading maps, and building a foundation of geographic place. I gather questions from the National Geographic Bee website and produce a worksheet of about 15 questions. In the beginning of the year I directly teach how to use the resources and I continually stress the value of creating mental maps so the information will become affixed to the background knowledge they are creating. The other goal is to have the kids participate in the State competition which happens in January. The secondary goal of the competition is less important to me than the weekly work, but the competition provides a focus that helps sustain the energy. It is fun work for the kids. We participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee every year as a school, and I have been the co-leader of the program. We have the individual teachers in gr. 4-8 hold their classroom bees, and then hold the championship/final round as a school assembly. I make the Geography Bee software available on the library computers all throughout the fall, and encourage its use during the browsing time/free time/open library times. So far, we have had good experiences with the Bee. My co-leader is our Social Studies Coordinator. Roberta Lader Rlader@cox.net For the past three years, our school has participated in the National Geographic Bee. I have run the entire competition. Each year we get more and more kids to participate, and the teachers are now more motivated to cover geography with their students. It's a ton of work for me, and you have to follow a specific format, but it's well worth it. Twice, we've had our school champion place in the Top Ten in the state championship. We do use the library for the preliminary rounds, but I am the assistant - not the person in charge. Our AEP (gifted and talented) teacher sets the whole thing up and runs it, with my help. When we do the finals, it is held in our auditorium in front of all of our 7 and 8th grade students. Due to space constraints, we can't fit the whole school population in our auditorium, so the 6th graders can participate in the Bee but their classes can't attend. Diane While Librarian-Media Specialist, John O. Arnn School, Sagamihara City, Japan, I held the Geography Bee in the LMC for several years and televisied it throughout campus via JOAS-TV, Ch. 3. The student body enjoyed watching it and the video generally worked OK, but I always had trouble using multiple mics. Good luck.
