Dear Friends, Fellow Maine authors Phillip and Hannah Hoose (father and daughter) have a new essay challenge going for K-3 students I thought you might like to know about! Toni "What Do You Think That Kid Should Do?" Take The 'Hey, Little Ant' Essay Challenge! For 10 years now, educators have been using the picture book Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose as an icebreaker for difficult discussions. The power is in the final question: "What do you think that Kid should do?" The Kid in the book is deciding whether to step on the ant beneath a raised up shoe or let the ant go free. Because the book does not answer the question but rather invites the reader to decide, educators can use it to launch discussions about what all living creatures have in common, about anti-bullying, and about mindful decision-making. Now you can challenge your K-3 classroom to answer the question, "what do you think that Kid should do?" as part of a nationwide online essay challenge. Look for essay challenge materials, educator guides and the entry form online at <http://www.heylittleant.com>www.heylittleant.com starting February 1st and ending May 1st, 2008. Prizes will be awarded for outstanding answers to students, their teachers and their librarians. This essay contest is sponsored by Tricycle Press, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Teachingbooks.net, Woodland Park Zoo, Salisbury University and the Friends Council on Education.
