It goes beyond respect. Anything that I would be discarding would be of now use to
any library, church, or mosque. I only discard materials that are missing pages,
water soaked, etc.As a school that owns about 700 Bibles, it would be impossible to
discard them any other way than ripping them up. Only speaking personally, as a
Christian I have respect for what the Scripture teaches, not the physical item.
That said, I do have some beautifully illustrated hardbound copies of the Bible in
my office - totally ruined over the years - but it is hard for me to toss them -
they are too beautiful to look at - or what is left of them.In the Seminary, I was
taught to respect what they taught- but not to revere the publication - the
physical item - I remember my professor saying "that would be idolatry." Many,
however, would disagree with that. It does present a wonderful topic for discussion
in library classes, however.We also own the Koran (2 copies), The Book of Mormon
(25 copies), Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (4 copies). So far, it
is only the Bible that has had to be discarded. To prevent any negative PR, I
usually take any possible discards home for removal - to be sensitive to

KoranI totally agree with Kim. Why would you tear the Bible and Koran up? Why not
just donate them to the local mosque or church or to a public library that sells
used books for fundraising? I know it's a little more work, but it's a lot more
sensitive than simply tearing them up. These are holy books to these religions,
and should be treated with respect.

Even if we do not consider something sacred ourselves, we should consider t=

want to do that? Our Christian culture may say we should not worship paper,=
but if others see a book as sacred, we should respect that for their sake=
. Our culture says that to even use the name of our God in vain is a sin, =
so it hurts us to hear it used as a curse word. People who are not Christia=
ns often do not do this in front of us just out respect.
We do not want to insult each other in anyway, no matter our faith. In fac=
