Thank you for all of you that contributed to my survey about helping ESL students in your library. These are some suggestions that my committee has for you. Recommendations for Immediate Implementation 1. Have a separate library orientation for your ESL classes. During this orientation point out where to find low level reading materials, books on tape, bilingual books, and language dictionaries. While these students are in a smaller setting they are more likely to ask questions. 2. Label your library with pictures. Add colorful pictures to all areas of the library. Pictures of famous people in the biography section, pictures of animals, or historical events. The more visually pleasing we can make the library the easier our ESL students can find things. 3. Meet with ESL teachers about what ESL level their students are on. Keep a list at the checkout desk of this information in order to help students when selecting books on their level. Keep a “cheat sheet” of good books that are appropriate for different levels so you can direct them to a book quickly. We have decided to focus on English low level/high interest books. We are working on a bibliography of non-fictions books for level 1 and 2's that help with curriculum concepts. We are also looking for fairy tales and fiction books that have strong characters that reflect our students cultures. Please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. The more dialog we can have about this subject the better we can serve our students. Suzanna L.
