A few more books to add to your list: Inventing Elliot by Graham Gardner Harmless by Dana Reinhardt (8th grade plus) Invisible by Mats Wahl Shooting Monarchs by John Halliday Sue Engel sengel@wausau.k12.wi.us Horace Mann Middle School http://www.wausau.k12.wi.us/ 3101 North 13th St Wausau, WI 54403 715-261-0728 >>> Beth Martin <BMartin@DCE.K12.WI.US> 2/14/2008 3:01 PM >>> I am still working on putting together a list of about 16-20 "meaty" novels that feature some form of conflict for a class of gifted readers. The conflict could be within the character, within relationships or a conflict between cultures. They will be finishing a unit on Outcasts and the theme of our conflict unit is "Hurt People Hurt People". I feel I don't quite have the mix I need for this very demanding group. Could you lend your expertise? I have listed the novels we have already chosen, those that we read and decided weren't quite right for this group and some that we are still considering. Are we missing some really good choices? Tell us what you think. Don't be afraid to be honest....we are really struggling with this list to get the right mix and could really use your suggestions. We use the Deborah Ellis books, The Breadwinner etc. at the sixth grade so we can't include those here. TIA. Books we plan to use: *Avi, Nothing But the Truth *Barakat, Ibtisam. Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood *Cormier, Robert. The Chocolate War. *Cummings, Priscilla. Red Kayak. *Curtis, Christopher Paul. Elijah of Buxton. *Donnely, Jennifer. A Northern Light *Kadohata, Cynthia. Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietna *Staples, Suzanne Fisher. Under the Persimmon Tree *Strasser, Todd. The Wave. *Zusak, Marcus. The Book Thief *Mikaelsen, Ben.
