[LM_NET] inventions

I am reading The Homework Machine to a 3rd grade class. (they are loving it) I want 
to tie it in to Read Across America Day where the Cat in the Hat had the pick up 
machine.
   
  I want them to Invent a machine like the cat in the hat. What would it look like, 
functionality, practicality.
   
  I am looking for something to jog their brain. I am also using books like The Kid 
Who Invented the Popsicle and I is for Idea, The Invention Alphabet.
   
  Does anyone have a handout that would get them started? maybe
