WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- From the streets of Detroit to pediatric brain
surgeon. On Thursday, Dr. Ben Carson received the 2008 Presidential
Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian award. Carson's story will
soon make it to the big screen.

Portraying Carson will be none other than Academy Award winning actor,
Cuba Gooding Junior. Stepping out of his limo, Gooding outstretched his
hand to Dr. Carson and said, "It is just such an honor to meet you, I
really mean that."

Dr. Carson's life story, from a single parent home, struggling in school
in Detroit, to getting world-wide recognition as the principal surgeon
in the successful 22 hour separation of Siamese twins, will now come to
life in a movie played by Gooding. Gooding says "I think there's such a
wonderful story of hope and blessing." He calls, Dr. Carson, "a true
instrument of God." As the director of pediatric neurosurgery at John's
Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, Dr. Carson has received his fare
share of accolades. Now he can add, the Presidential Medal of Freedom to
that list. "It's a wonderful thing, you can't downplay it in any way,"
Dr. Carson says.

But he says nothing compares to the joy of helping others even when it's
against all odds. "What I've discovered is that the only people who
accomplish much in life are the people who are willing to go out there
and push the envelope and challenge the status quo."

"Dr. Carson ultimately hopes the movie and his life-story will inspire
countless children to go after their goals, no matter what their
circumstances." Dr. Carson says, "I want people to realize that the
person who has the most to do with what happens to them, is them. It's
not some environmental factor." It's an attitude that he says has made
his life, better than a Hollywood movie.
