There were many more requests for a hit than there were suggestions and ideas. Perhaps this hit will stimulate a few more ideas. I'll be happy to post again if there are any further ideas. From Fran Jackson at Jenkins Elem. in Spring, TX: I have Britannica, but would do the same if I had World Book. I take the kids through each facet of the encyclopedia and have a book mark ready for them to take home so that they can use it at home and be my "technology" ambassadors to their parents. It usually took me 2 or 3 visits to cover everything. Make sure your computer lab has it all ready to go as well. Marie Ferner of State Road Elem. in Webster, NY: I just did one on the presidents with fifth grade and World Book Kids version. Each student had to prove/correct the statement for the president. [I created a spreadsheet of an incorrect fact about each of the presidents]. And then write another sentence fact about the president. I had them use the Kids version, due to the amount of reading. I went through each of the presidents and created the sentences, so I knew that they'd find the answers in the articles. Note: perhaps Marie will post her documents on the LM_Net Wiki. Janelle Langford at Bluestone Middle Schook, Skipwith, VA: I am collaborating this year with the 6th grade social studies teachers who assign the project and bring in their classes; then I teach WB Online via the information the students are seeking. I have found this in-context teaching to be more effective. I just talk the students through the things I want them to know and then they complete their information on their own and with guidance from me and the social studies teachers. We have just finished our 2nd lesson and a third is planned in 2 weeks. Doug Alichwer of Swatara Middle School of Central Dauphin SD in Harrisburg, PA: Provided a list of questions he used with students, sort of a scavenger hunt within World Book online. Note: Perhaps Doug will post these on the LM_Net Wiki Below are my tentative plans: World Book Online Gr. 5 Week 1 World Book Kids; Play video “Online Tour of World Book Kids” with Atlas the dog. Either click on it on the home page or click the online tutorial button at bottom of the page. Explore Keyword Search, Subject sections, activities, rotating picture links. Explore Dictionary, Maps, Pictures Week 2 World Book Student: Play featured video. Keyword search. Show lists in left column, Show main sections in article. Other Ways to Find It: Subject divisions Dictionary Atlas: Show links in side bar Click from world to NA to US to Wisc. & show Links on Wisc. map Save to Backpack Week 3 World Book Online Scavenger Hunt I'm considering creating my own tour of WB online using screen capture software, Screencast -o-matic http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/ (free, online). I'm still struggling with coming up with ideas for making it interesting to my students. I've created a page on LM_net's wiki, http://lmnet.wikispaces.com/World+Book+Online for sharing this information. -- Anne Oelke Library Media Specialist pK-12 Cambria-Friesland School District Cambria, WI mailto:cflibrary@cf.k12.wi.us -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
